Complete list of lectures -  Poster presentation list    Provisional lecture sheduale (.pdf)  NEW

under the high patronage of
Monsieur Jacques Chirac
President of the French Republic

The subject: The evolving world of orchids - resolving differing approaches?

In science: Classifications based on morphology often conflict with those based upon DNA.
In conservation:Habitat destruction continue despite all the evidence for habitat protection.
In law: National and International legislation does not always agree, CITES and Biodiversity matters are decided by different Authorities.
In information technology: The internet brings both benefits and problems
In horticulture: Traditional nurseries cannot always compete with the world wide markets

Those are some examples of the problems that face the orchid world today.
When possible, two guest speakers will present alternative points of view on the same subject and a moderator will try to make the synthesis or suggest a new approach to the problem.
We will also take the opportunity to present to the world the little-known orchid floras of Francophone countries including France, North Africa, Madagascar, New Caledonia, Guyana etc. Of course, horticultural topics of general interest, such as cultivation, conservation, local floras and new discoveries in species and hybrids, will also be aired.
Everyone will find topics of interest to them. A detailed lecture programme will be available on this page by spring 2004.

Translation

The wide variety of rooms and facilities available permits any number of informal meetings. World Orchid Conference Registrants will have their own private area with a bar and restaurant, managed by Group Mercure, whose cuisine is justly famous. The Scientific Sessions will be in English; the majority of the Horticultural and Conservation Sessions will be in French or English with simultaneous translation into English or French. If there are enough Registrants from a single language group we propose to have simultaneous translation in additional languages, and we anticipate that we may be translating the lectures into Spanish, German, and/or Japanese. A total of 100 lectures are planned.

“The Proceedings” will be published by Naturalia Publications, who published The Proceedings of 15th World Orchid Conference, Rio de Janeiro, 1996 (496 pages in colour). It will be released by the end of 2005. Lectures in English will be summarised in French and vice versa. In addition to the lectures, the most important moments of the Congress will be photographed and included in the Proceedings. As usual, prize-winning plants and the most beautiful exhibits will also be described and illustrated. This high-quality book is included in the subscription fee for the Conference delegates, but it will appeal to all as a beautiful souvenir of this unique event. It would make an excellent gift for any orchid lovers who did not have the chance to attend. Orders may be placed either before or during the Congress at the pre-publication cost of 80 €.
